Questions asked by Potential Users:

Q. How do I use the information provided by ViewTracker™?

A.   On the rest of the internet, no serious webmaster would consider trying to compete without access to visitor data. But eBay® sellers have never had access to this data, so the benefits may not be immediately obvious.

But the benefits are enormous...

The most important reason to have real data about your visitors is because the alternative is... simply guessing. And when it comes to predicting customer behavior, it's impossible to always guess correctly. ViewTracker™ shows you exactly how your auction visitors think and behave so you're no longer required to guess. By knowing how your visitors search, browse, scan and sort auctions, you can optimize future auctions to take advantage of those discoveries. Here are some examples:

  1. In our experiments, we've found that many items are sought after by people with fairly predictable "body clocks". Certain items receive the most traffic in the morning, while others receive the most traffic at night. Most products that we've experimented with follow similar cycles, so knowing this data about the items you sell helps determine the best ending time for your auctions.

  2. Similarly, it's readily apparent that certain days are better for selling certain items. This "best day" varies from item to item, but once you see the statistics for yourself, you'll realize that ending certain auctions on a certain day puts your auction at a distinct disadvantage.

  3. By seeing the most popular search terms used by visitors to find your auction, you gain tremendous insight into how your potential customers find this sort of item, which search terms you should be emphasizing in your auction title, and which search terms are seldom used. This is also a great tool for coming up with new search terms that you may never have thought of.

  4. People find different auction items in different ways. If you discover, for example, that most people find your auction through eBay's Product Finder utility... instead of by searching or browsing the category... it will be to your advantage to pay more attention to that area in the future.

  5. Similarly, some products attract buyers who seldom search anything but "Titles Only." On the other hand, there are products that tend to attract buyers who perform very elaborate searches, using all sorts of search preferences, and who invariably search "Titles AND Descriptions." Unless and until you know EXACTLY how customers search for your items, your auction success is largely dependent on your psychic abilities!

  6. Depending on the item, you may discover that most of your visitors sort auctions a particular way. For example, in some categories customers prefer to avoid "clutter" by searching items "High price to low price". With those statistics at your disposal, you'd want to adjust your starting price to make sure you're found on the first page of eBay search results, making it easier for buyers to find your item quickly.

  7. Many of our users have discovered that some categories drive more qualified traffic than others. By seeing which categories people are actually browsing and and sorting in to find you, you'll be able to focus your efforts on listing in the most profitable categories.

  8. You may be paying for add-on features for your auctions, but how do you know if they're working or not? By seeing where your traffic is actually coming from, you can immediately see which extras are worth paying for, and which ones aren't.

These are all very simple, but logical, ways to improve your auctions. But without real visitor data, you'll never be able to test and optimize your auctions like the examples above. Remember, your auction listing fees are fixed, so any improvement that generates more visitors... and thus higher prices... is pure profit!

Q. Exactly how does ViewTracker™ work?

A.   Whenever a seller creates an auction for eBay®, he does so by either typing some basic HTML code into eBay's auction creation page or by using a third-party application to do it. Once he has decided on the formatting and the wording for his auction, he uploads this to eBay's servers. Now, whenever a visitor makes a request to view that auction, eBay's servers downloads the formatted information to the visitor's web browser.

When the seller is creating this auction, if he is a ViewTracker™ subscriber, he can add a little code to the bottom of his auction and include that in his auction description.

When he adds that code, this causes two things to happen. First, it loads a small (88 x 31 pixels) Sellathon counter and places it at the bottom of his auction. Also, every time that counter is loaded, it sends a huge amount of data to Sellathon's computers.

In other words, every time a visitor visits the auction, it sends Sellathon's computers information about the visitor, the auction he's viewing, and the previous page the visitor viewed. From this data, ViewTracker™ deciphers the information that appears on the seller's stats page.

Q. What kind of information does ViewTracker™ provide?

A.   Currently, ViewTracker™ provides the following information about each visitor:
  • The sequential number of the visitor. (Is he the 14th visitor or the 126th?)

  • The date and time the visitor arrived at your auction.

  • The visitor's IP. (By clicking the IP, you'll see ONLY those visits originating from this IP.)

  • The visitor's geographical region (for example - "New York, USA")

  • How much time the visitor spent looking at your auction.

  • If the Reserve Price was met when the visitor arrived.

  • If the item has received a bid yet.

  • If the current visitor is the high bidder, a bidder who has been outbid, or no bidder at all. Also, if the visitor is watching this auction in "My eBay"

  • Whether the visitor browsed a category, searched a category, searched all of eBay, used eBay's Product Finder Utility, came from "See Seller's Other Items", or some other page.

  • If browsing, which category he was browsing in. If searching, which category he was searching in (if applicable).

  • If searching, what search term(s) did visitor use?

  • If searching, did visitor search "Titles Only" or "Titles and Descriptions"?

  • If user found your auction through the "View Seller's Other Items" link, and if so, which auction did he come from?

  • Which page of auction listings did the visitor find your auction on?

  • Did visitor elect to view Auctions Only, "Buy it Now" items only, or both?

  • What search preferences/options did the visitor select. Some examples include: Show/Hide pictures, Sellers that accept Paypal, Price Range, International Availability, Regional Searching, Gallery View, Show Gift Items, etc.

  • How did visitor sort results? For example, High Price to Low Price? Ending Soonest?

Q. How much does ViewTracker™ cost?

A.   For most users, $49 for unlimited access for one year, or $4.95 a month. That allows you to track up to 50 simultaneous auctions at any given time.

For Advanced and Enterprise users, the cost ranges from $8.95 a month (or $89/year) for up to 250 simultaneous auctions... to $19.95 a month (or $199/year) for an unlimited number of simultaneous auctions.

Q. What do you mean by "simultaneous auctions"?

A.   The number of auctions you're allowed to track all at the same time. With our Basic Seller package, you are not limited to the number of auctions you can run, but you can only have 50 tracking at the same time. If you typically run more than 50 auctions at the same time, you'll need to upgrade to the Advanced Seller or Enterprise Seller packages.

Q. What are the exact instructions for using Sellathon's ViewTracker™?

A.   First, you'll need to sign up as a subscriber. To do that, you need to select which package is most appropriate for you, and then register.

During registration, you will select a user id and a password.

Once you've done that, you will be able to log in to your account.

You can log in from Sellathon's main page, or from
http://www.sellathon.com/login.php.

When you log in the first time, you'll need to click the "Account Information" link to get your tracking code. Your tracking code will automatically contain the user id that you selected when you subscribed, so there's nothing that you need to edit. Once you've verified that this code contains your user id, you will then paste the complete code at the bottom of any auction you want to track. Make sure you don't alter this code in any way.

(To copy and paste text, highlight the text you wish to copy by dragging your mouse over it with the left mouse button depressed. When the appropriate text is highlighted, press the CTRL key and the "C" key on your keyboard simultaneously. To "paste" this text elsewhere, put your cursor in the location where you wish the text to be inserted, and then press the CTRL key and the "V" key simultaneously. The text you copied will appear at the new location.)

From there, ViewTracker™ does the rest.

Here's how to log into your stats: Go to http://www.sellathon.com/login.php and enter your user id and the password you selected when you joined.

You will then be transported to a page that keeps track of all of your ongoing auctions. (You don't have to enter this data yourself. ViewTracker™ takes care of all that automatically.)

(If you're tracking quite a few auctions, you may find it useful to use ViewTracker™'s sort features that let you sort each of the columns [Auction number, Auction Title, Number of Visitors, Expiration Date] from low-to-high or high-to-low.)

By clicking the little button that says "Details", you will be taken to the Detailed Visitor Log for that particular auction. You'll see comprehensive data for each auction visit. For more information about that, see Question #3 above.

Or, you can click the "Highlights" button for each auction. Instead of giving you a visitor-by-visitor log, this will provide you with a summary of activity for that auction, including:
  • The most active time-of-day, hour by hour, for this auction
  • The busiest day of the week for this auction
  • The most active date for this auction
  • The most frequently seen IP for this auction
  • The most popular browser settings used by visitors to this aution
  • How this auction compares (in various categories) to Sellathon's average
  • Most popular ways visitors are finding this auction
  • Most popular categories browsed
  • Most popular categories searched
  • Most common sorting preferences being used by your visitors
  • The page number that visitors are finding you on most often
  • Most popular search terms being used to find this auction
  • Whether visitors are primarily searching in Titles only or Titles & Descriptions
  • Which search terms tend to be "Title only" terms and which ones are "Description" terms

Q. How does relisting work?

A.   When you relist an auction on eBay®, ViewTracker™ treats it as a completely new auction and restarts the counter at zero.

Q. What if I go over the maximum number of simultaneous auctions permitted in the package I purchase?

A.   In our experience, nobody can know exactly how many auctions they're going to be running at any given time, so don't worry about it. If you try to track more than your limit, you'll receive an on-screen notification asking if you want to upgrade to the next package.

If you do upgrade, ViewTracker™ will proceed with tracking your auctions... up to the new limit. If you choose NOT to upgrade, ViewTracker™ will just ignore any incoming auction data above and beyond your current limit.

Q. Does ViewTracker™ work with international eBays or just eBay US?

A.   Yes, at the moment we're supporting eBay US, eBay Canada, eBay UK, eBay Sweden, eBay Ireland and eBay Australia. ViewTracker™ works reasonably well with eBay Germany and others, but we're not supporting it (at least not in German). Eventually, we will develop a fully-supported version of Viewtracker™ for all eBay branded auction sites.

Q. How long will store items with a duration of "Good Til Cancelled" continue to track?

A.    Ebay store listings that are posted with the duration of "Good Til Cancelled" will continue to be tracked within your ViewTracker™ account for 90 days after the end of the month in which they were listed. For example, if you listed an eBay store item with the duration of "Good Til Cancelled" in January, it would no longer be available in your ViewTracker™ account in May of the same year.

Questions asked by New and Free-Trial Users:

Q. I've forgotten my password. What do I do?

A.   From the login page, click the
Forgotten Password link. You'll be prompted to enter your user id. You will be automatically sent an email containing your password. (This email can only be sent to the email address that's listed in your account.) If you've forgotten your user id or you've changed email addresses, you'll need to file a support request here, and ask them to retrieve that information for you. Once they've positively identified you, they will provide the login information.

Q. I can't log in!

A.   If you can't log in, it's because of one (or more) of these 3 reasons:
  1. You have JavaScript or cookies disabled. (Or you have your internet security settings set to high, which also disables these features.) Our stats page requires JavaScript and cookies to be enabled.

  2. You're using a firewall in which you'll need to identify and set our domain (sellathon.com) as a "safe zone".

  3. To login, popup blockers must be temporarily turned off, or you must set sellathon.com as "allowable" or whatever the equivalent function is for your popup blocker.

If, after trying these suggestions, you still can't log in, file a support request
here. We'll walk you through it.

Q. Can ViewTracker™ see all my auctions on eBay without me doing anything to them?

A.   No. ViewTracker™ is a Javascript code that must be placed in your auctions before ViewTracker™ can gather information about your visitors. ViewTracker™ has no way to track your auctions that do not contain the ViewTracker™ code.

Q. I just put the ViewTracker™ code into my auctions, but nothing shows up on my Current Auctions List. What happened?

A.   Auctions will not begin to track until they receive a visitor. Our servers cannot tell that your auctions are out there until they receive information from them. The most effective way to determine if your ViewTracker™ code is working properly is to visit your auction. That visit should cause the auction to appear on your Current Auctions list. If you have copied the ViewTracker™ code into your auction, then visited it, but it is still not tracking, please file a support request
here with the auction ID number(s). Our staff will look them over, and find out why they're not working.

Q.Does my subscription fee include changes and updates to the ViewTracker™ software?

A.   Yes. Any and all changes and updates to ViewTracker™ are included in your subscription.

Q. Is there a message board for ViewTracker™ users?

A.   Yes. Our message boards can be reached at
http://forum.sellathon.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl. Please note that you must register for an account on the message boards before you post, and that your ViewTracker™ account does not automatically register you on the boards.

Q. When are Customer Service and/or Technical Support available?

A.   Our office hours at Sellathon are 9 am to 6 pm Pacific Time, Monday through Friday.

Q. How can I reach Sellathon for support?

A.   You can reach our customer support department by filling out the web form on the following page:
http://www.sellathon.com/support.html. We also monitor our message boards closely, but request that any "bugs" or technical issues be reported using this web form for tracking purposes. Finally, there's a "Click here to report a problem" link at the bottom of every ViewTracker™ screen. You are encouraged to use that as it also sends useful account information to us when you submit the form.

Q. When does my account expire?

A.   The time remaining on your account is displayed on the home page of your results, and when you first log in.

Q. What does the graph at the top of the page represent?

A.   This graph will show you the total number of visitors received in a particular "folder" during the last 24 hours, broken down by hour. The circled number displays the number of visits received during the peak of activity (during the past 24 hours).

Q. ViewTracker™ says I'm over my license limit, and it has a list of auctions. What's this all about?

A.   If you have gone over your simultaneous auction tracking limit (50 for Basic Sellers, 250 for Advanced Sellers), you'll get a warning message telling you that we're tracking the auctions that put you over the limit, but the results won't be displayed until some of your current auctions expire, or you manually "expire" them in your tracking. Below the warning, there will be a list of the auction numbers that are being tracked, but aren't being displayed.

Q. How do I log out?

A.   To log out, simply click on the "Log Out" link on the navigation bar at the top of the page.

Q. The ViewTracker™ Code in the "Your Code" box looks a lot different now. Why?

A.   Version 3.0 gathers more information than Version 2.0 which gathered a lot more information than Version 1.0. Because of this, the ViewTracker™ code is a bit longer than it used to be. It still conforms to all eBay policies regarding Javascript and third party credits.

Q. How do I copy my ViewTracker™ code?

A.   There are two ways to copy your ViewTracker™ code. The first way is to click the "Copy Code to Windows Clipboard" button. This will automatically copy the information completely.

If the button does not work, simply highlight the entire code, and copy it by right-clicking and selecting "Copy", or press Ctrl-C on your keyboard.

Q. How do I change or update my personal contact information?

A.   To change the personal information Sellathon has on file for you, access the "User Preferences" page by clicking on the "User Preferences" link in the navigation bar at the top of the page. The "Contact Information" box is on the left side of this page. Make any changes needed, and click the "Save Your Changes" button.

Q. How do I change my password?

A.   To change your password, access the "User Preferences" page by clicking the "User Preferences" link in the navigation bar at the top of the page. In the "Member Information" box, type your new password into the box labeled "ViewTracker™ Password:", and then click the "Save Your Changes" button.

Q. How do I access my Current Auctions?

A.   To access your Current Auctions, simply click on the folder of your choice in the folder navigation box. This will display a list of auctions in that folder.

Q. How do I view the Detailed Visitor Log for my auction?

A.   To view your Detailed Visitor Log, click on "Details" button for the auction you wish to see.

Q. How do I see the Highlights for a single auction?

A.   To see the Highlights page for a specific auction, click on the "Highlights" button for auction you wish to see.

Q. How do I see the cumulative Highlights for multiple auctions... or an entire folder?

A.   To see the cumulative Highlights for multiple auctions, click the checkboxes next to all the auctions you want to see, then select "Display combined Highlights page for all auctions you've selected" from the drop down menu and click "Go".

To see the "Highlights" for an entire folder, click on the folder to display its contents, then simply click the "Highlights" buton in the "Folder Summary" box.

Q. How do I download information about my auctions?

A.   To select auctions that you would like to download the visitor information for, click "Download Data" in the navigation bar at the top of the page. You'll be taken to the Download page which allows you to select which auction or group of auctions to download.

Questions asked by Existing Users:

Q. Will ViewTracker™ track visitors to my "About Me" page, or my website?

A.   No. ViewTracker™ will only work when it is inside an eBay auction or store item. Sellathon has no plans, at this time, to track any other type of web page.

Q. My auction has a bid, but no icon for the "high bidder". How does that happen?

A.   If you'll recall, ViewTracker™ requires a visit to your auction to send data to our servers. So tracking your bidders is not a real-time process, because ViewTracker™ cannot follow your bidders from your auction through the Bid Confirmation process. The only way ViewTracker™ can determine if a visitor is a bidder on your auction is from the "flag" that eBay sends with their information when requesting your auction page from the server. This means that if your high bidder does not come back to your auction after placing the bid, you will not see a "smiley" face indicating that. The "Bids" column, though, will change to reflect the difference in the number of bids as soon as your auction receives another visitor. If your high bidder returns several times to check on your auction, then you will see several "smileys" regardless of the number of bids in the "Bids" column.

Q. In the Method of Arrival column, it says my visitor arrived by a Direct Link. What does that mean?

A.   A Direct Link can be any number of things, but usually means that the visitor did not come from inside eBay. Some examples are visitors using links they received in an email or they have stored as a bookmark, visits from various websites, desktop sniping applications, and visits from third party auction monitoring services.

Q. In the Method of Arrival column, it says my visitor was "Surfing Anonymously". What does that mean?

A.   "Surfing Anonymously" means that the visitor is using software to mask the information normally sent across the web. This doesn't necessarily mean the visitor is "up to no good"; it's usually a sign that the visitor is extremely privacy-conscious.

Q. ViewTracker™ is reporting the incorrect geographic location for my IP address. Why?

A.   At the current stage of the internet's development, it's impossible to associate an IP address to the geographic location of an actual person. An IP address, remember, is simply the last router that requested information for them. This means that the location associated with an IP address could be hundreds of miles from the actual visitor. Large Internet Service Providers, like AOL, EarthLink, and MSN have national networks of routers, and information can be sent through any part of it before reaching your visitor's computer. The geographic location reported for your visitors should not be considered a pinpoint of where they actually are, but merely a regional representation.

Q. What is a Snipe Alert?

A.   A Snipe Alert is what ViewTracker™ will display in the Method of Arrival column if a visitor lists your auction on a hosted auction monitoring and bidding service. Most visitors who list auctions on these services intend to place the high bid at the very last second of your auction, which is known as "sniping". If your auction receives a visit that we can determine came from a service like this, you will see a crosshair icon and the words ***SNIPE ALERT!*** in the Method of Arrival for that visit. Not all monitoring services will cause the Snipe Alert to be displayed. We prefer to err on the side of caution, and we will not report a Snipe unless we are 100% sure about it. Additionally, we cannot track desktop software for sniping (that usually appears as a Direct Link), and obviously we can't predict manual sniping. Finally, since we can't tell if a previous snipe gets cancelled, a Snipe Alert is not a guarantee that a bid will be placed.

Q. What does "reprocess auctions" mean?

A.   When you've gone over your auction limit, and you manually "expire" some current auctions, you have two ways to make new auctions display in your results. The first way is to log out, and log back in. This will "reprocess" your list of current auctions. The second way is to click the "reprocess auctions" button. This will move the over-limit auctions into the current auctions list without having to log out.

Q. What does "Auctions Running" mean?

A.   This represents the number of Current Auctions being displayed in your tracking results. The number in parentheses represents the limit for your license (50 for Sellers, 250 for Advanced Sellers).

Q. What does "Auctions W/ Bids" mean?

A.   This represents the number of Current Auctions that have at least one bid on them. The number in parentheses is the percentage of all your Current Auctions that have at least one bid on them. If you are over your license limit, any auctions that are tracking but not being displayed will not be included in this statistic.

Q. What does "Being Watched" mean?

A.   This represents the number of Current Auctions that have been stored in at least one visitor's "My eBay" page. The number in parentheses is the percentage of all your Current Auctions that have been stored in a visitor's "My eBay" page at least once. If you are over your license limit, any auctions that are tracking but not being displayed will not be included in this statistic.

Q. What does "Being Sniped" mean?

A.   This represents the number of Current Auctions that have been listed at least once with a hosted auction monitoring and bidding service. The number in parentheses is the percentage of all your Current Auctions that have been listed with an auction monitoring service at least once. If you are over your license limit, any auctions that are tracking but not being displayed will not be included in this statistic.

Q. What does "Avg Visitors Per Auction" mean?

A.   This is the average number of visitors, calculated from the total visitors for all Current Auctions. If you are over your license limit, any auctions that are tracking but not being displayed will not be included in this statistic.

Q. What does "Value of Bids" mean?

A.   This is the total dollar amount for all the bids on your Current Auctions. If you are over your license limit, any auctions that are tracking but not being displayed will not be included in this statistic.

Q. How do I create my own folders?

A.   To create a folder, access the "User Preferences" page by clicking on "User Preferences" at the top of the page. On the "User Preferences" page, scroll down to "Folder Management". Type the name you would like the folder to have, and click the "Create" button. The new folder should appear in the "Auction Folders" box on the bottom left of the page.

Q. How do I view a Highlights page for an entire folder?

A.   To see a summary Highlights page for an entire folder of Current Auctions, click on the [HI LITES] button after the name of the folder in the Folder Summary box (on the right side of the Home Page).

Q. How do I move an auction to another folder?

A.   While looking at the list of auctions in a folder, click the checkbox next to any auctions you wish to move. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and select the destination folder from the pull-down menu, then click the "Go" button.

Q. How do I manually "expire" an auction?

A.   There may be times that you wish to "expire" an auction before its original expiration date. While looking at the list of auctions in a folder, click the checkbox next to any auctions you wish to expire. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click the "Expire Checked" box. This action cannot be undone, so please be certain you are only expiring the auctions you intend to!

Q. How do I clear the "New" column for a specific auction?

A.   To clear the New visitors for a specific auction, click on the number in the "New" column.

Q. How do I clear the "New" column for several auctions at once, or all auctions in a folder?

A.   To clear the New visitors for multiple auctions, click the checkbox next to the auction(s) you wish to reset. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and select "Reset New Visitor Counter for Checked Auctions" in the pull-down menu, then click on the "Go" button.

Q. Why has my Sellathon counter stopped working?

A.   In an effort to improve safety on their site, eBay is currently in the process of changing their auction listing pages to restrict access to certain web page functionality. The Sellathon counter will not work given these restrictions. At this time these changes have only been made to a sample of listings on eBay Motors but will continue to be rolled out to the rest of the site. If your Sellathon counter stops working, and your listing is in eBay Motors, please contact support at
http://www.sellathon.com/support.html.

Q. Why has my Sellathon ViewTracker information stopped working?

A.   In an effort to improve safety on their site, eBay is currently in the process of changing their auction listing pages to restrict access to certain web page functionality. The Sellathon ViewTracker is not able to collect data given these restrictions. We are actively working on a solution to this problem. Thank you for your patience. As soon as we have a solution we will post it here as well as in on the forum at
http://forum.sellathon.com/.
